SGTA Seminar

The SGTA seminar is a bi-weekly meeting organized by the senior GTAs (SGTAs) and Dr. Arnold. The seminars are geared toward issues affecting graduate students. They include a range of professional development topics such as:

  • Balancing coursework, teaching, and research
  • Building a competitive CV and/or resume
  • Preparing job application materials such as research, teaching, and diversity statements
  • Building a professional website
  • Navigating your relationship with your adviser
  • The teaching and learning of mathematics

  • February, 8th, 2022: Dissertation writing, hosted by Aidan Murphy (Ph.D. student).
  • January, 27th, 2022: Setting achievable and measurable goals for your life as a grad student.
  • October 28th, 2021: Learning style, what is yours? A relaxed discussion of learning styles and patterns.
  • September, 28th, 2021: The Art of Teaching, hosted by Dr. Greg Justice from VT school of performing arts.
  • September, 18th, 2021: Choosing and ordering student work
  • August, 27th, 2021: Webpage Building Workshop, hosted by Aidan Murphy and Haroun Meghaichi (Ph.D. students).
  • April, 8th, 2021: Work Habits & Time Management. 
  • March, 26th, 2021:  Git and GitHub.
  • March, 16th, 2021: Latex and Tikz. 
  • February, 16th, 2021: Zoom tutoring/office hours.
  • January, 29th, 2021: Webpage Building Workshop, hosted by Taewon Cho (Ph.D. student). 
  • November, 30th, 2020: Semester reflections. 
  • November, 5th, 2020: Short research presentations, hosted by Dr. Palsson, Dr. Gugercin, and Dr. Hewett from the math department. Sean Sovine and Aidan Murphy (Ph.D. students) gave short presentations about their research. 
  • October, 8th, 2020: Writing complementary problems for different contexts, lectures/exams/homeworks.
  • September, 21th, 2020:  Alumni panel: where are they now, a panel featuring some successful department alumni who shared their experiences after leaving VT. 
  • September 10th, 2020: rubric/grading activity.
